Terms of Service
Last updated: October 18, 2026
In short
- Hato is an email client for Mac that works on top of your Gmail.
- Your email is yours and stays in Gmail.
- What you do in Hato really happens in your Gmail.
- It's provided as is, and you can stop using it whenever you want.
1. Who we are and acceptance
These terms govern the download and use of Hato, a macOS application developed by Mat Veiga (“we”). By downloading or using Hato you accept these terms. If you don't agree with them, don't use the app.
2. What Hato is
Hato is a desktop email client that connects to your Gmail account to help you keep it in order: it screens new senders, sorts your email into inboxes and lets you read, reply to and organize your messages.
Hato is not an email provider: your email service is provided by Google through Gmail. Hato is an independent app and is not affiliated with, sponsored or endorsed by Google. Gmail and Google are trademarks of Google LLC.
3. Requirements
- A Mac with Apple Silicon and a compatible version of macOS.
- A Gmail account and an internet connection.
- Complying with Google's Terms of Service and the Gmail Program Policies.
4. Your Google account
You connect through Google's authorization system, on its official page. You are responsible for the security of your account and your Mac, and for what is done from them. You can revoke Hato's access at any time from your Google Account.
5. License
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable license to install and use Hato on your computers. You may not:
- Sell, rent or redistribute Hato as your own.
- Modify, decompile or reverse engineer it, except to the extent permitted by law.
- Use it to send spam or unlawful content, or to access accounts that aren't yours.
Hato, its name and its logo belong to us. Some of its pieces are open source by other authors, under their own licenses (section 14).
6. Your content and your actions
Your email, contacts and files are yours: Hato acquires no rights over them.
The actions you take in Hato are carried out in your Gmail account. Sending a message really sends it, archiving removes it from your inbox, and deleting moves it to Gmail's trash, which Google empties automatically after 30 days. Check what you send and what you delete.
7. Google services
Hato relies on Google's APIs to work. If Google changes, limits or withdraws those services, some Hato features may stop being available. Your use of Gmail is governed by Google's terms.
8. Updates and availability
We may release new versions with improvements or changes, or stop distributing Hato. We work to make it run well, but we can't guarantee it will be error-free or available without interruption.
During the public beta, Hato is free. Each beta version works for 90 days from when it’s built, so nobody keeps running bugs that are already fixed: from day 80, Hato reminds you with the date, and on day 90 it asks you to download the latest version from this website. Your email stays in Gmail, so nothing is lost. Hato also lets you know when there’s a new version.
9. Warranties and liability
Hato is provided “as is”. To the extent permitted by law, we offer no warranties beyond those the law requires, and we are not liable for indirect damages, for failures or changes in third-party services, or for uses of the app contrary to these terms.
Nothing above limits the rights you have under consumer protection law, or our liability in cases where the law does not allow it to be limited.
10. Ending your use
You can stop using Hato whenever you want: uninstall it and, if you wish, revoke its access from your Google Account. We may revoke your license if you breach these terms.
11. Privacy
How we handle your data is explained in the privacy policy, which forms part of these terms.
12. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms, we will publish the new version on this page with its update date. If you keep using Hato after the change, you accept the new version.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by Spanish law. If you are a consumer, you may bring claims before the courts of your place of residence.
14. Open source and thanks
Tempo was an email client for Mac, now closed, that published part of its work as open source. Hato is inspired by it and uses two of those pieces. Heartfelt thanks to the people who made them:
- tempo-email-parser, which prepares each email to be read safely: it removes trackers and separates quotes and signatures. Copyright (c) 2023 Tempo GmbH.
- Quill, the icons of the app and of this website. Copyright (c) 2021 Casper Lourens.
Both are distributed under the MIT license, which reads:
Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and associated documentation files (the "Software"), to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions:
The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the Software.
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SOFTWARE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE.
Hato also uses other open-source libraries, each with its own license. The full list, with their texts, is on Licenses and ships inside the app.
